This project included the complete renovation of approximately 20,000 sf of existing dining and kitchen space within a common dining hall that serves 4 attached dormitories at Baylor University. The existing dining rooms and food court areas were stripped down to the concrete structure and completely refinished with a modern look and a more functional floorplan to meet current dining trends.
Due to the age of the building, all MEP systems were either completely over-hauled or removed and replaced to accommodate the new kitchen equipment and food station layout. This fast-paced project was started in early May 2015 and was back to serving food to the students when the dorms re-opened in late August 2015. Due to the age and appearance of the old dining hall, demolishing every square inch of the existing interior of the building, basically leaving only the concrete structure throughout was planned. During the early stages of the design, there was a request from some faculty to retain some of the more “historic” elements within the original dining hall that was built in the 1930s. The most prominent original element that was requested to be incorporated into the new design was the plaster moulding that wrapped the structural concrete beams and lined the perimeter of the dining hall at the ceiling level.
