Renovations and Additions for Balcones Distillery
Builder: Barsh Company
Design Firm: Winton Engineering
Owner: Balcones Distilling Waco, TX
Balcones Distilling produces Texas whisky and spirits. The distillery sprung up as a homegrown operation in Waco eight years ago and has made its home for the past several years in a former welding shop. Balcones has experienced exponential growth, increased demand, and critical acclaim, amassing over 140 national and international awards.
The project included renovations, additions, and improvements to transform the former Texas Fireproof Storage Building into a working whisky distillery facility for Balcones Distilling. The new facility handles all aspects of the distilling process: grain handling, grain milling, cooking, mashing, fermentation, distillation, aging, bottling, and shipping. Substantial alterations were required to accommodate these various activities. Modifications included renovation of 57,093 sf of interior space, roof replacement, new MEP/Fire systems, retrofit for freight elevators, and removal of portions of the building for a fermenter area and upper brew house. Additions included 5,486 sf, including a still house, utility building, mill room, stair tower, and motor control center. Site improvements included 26,881 sf of paving and equipment pads. The facility houses two large copper still sets and will feature a tasting room, gift shop, and tours for the public.
